Description
It's hard to miss the hollow eyes, somehow staring you down across the room. Dana is a formidable presence in the room, and she hasn't even opened her mouth yet. When she does, she will either make you do something for her, or make you feel insignificant next to her might.
She might seem crabby at a first glance (excuse the pun), but this façade is only for self defence. Behind it, there's a genuine warmth and gratitude for life. It all stems from the things she devotes herself to do, and anything it might be, it's done passionately. Dana will always be loyal to those she holds closest to her heart, she often says she'd go to hell and back for them.
Her outward image is very important, she seeks respect out of everyone. She's prone to holding grudges, and she'll always see retribution for everything. Although she wants to seem like she was born a stone-cold motherfucker, she has been reclused, weak and vulnerable for most of her life. Her hybrid heritage leaves her with an incompatibility between her blood and ink. She has been haunted by a drug addiction that was at times impossible to curb. Yet, she keeps going, in spite of everything, in spite of her always looming death.
Story
Early years
Cassandra Dobrovich hatched in the small town of Silvertip, before it was a Hammerhead Bridge away from Inkopolis. Her father is a king crab, while her mother has always posed to be an inkling. She was called “Cass” by her family, and she used to present herself under this name.
Her childhood had a streak of long hospitalizations. Not all of her organs are adapted to sustain ink circulation: she was lethargic and would often faint, or would end up in sheer pain. She was also diagnosed with an autoimmune ink disease. Her condition slightly improved around the time she turned 15, and was connected to her newfound ability to shapeshift. This was a surprise to doctors, and yet, she is unable to produce more ink, like her peers. Thus, she was required to take daily medication, to manage both her ink and her pain.
As she spent a good part of her life in hospitals, she felt disconnected to others’ childhood experiences. As soon as she was able to gain more independence, and worry less about her autoimmune disease, she began catching up on life.
At 17, she became more involved with the music scene of Silvertip, filled with garage bands and scratchy, raw performances. She would often join these gigs and become friends with band members and fans. Once in a blue moon, a good local band would show up, though they would quickly move over to the neighbouring capital. One such band would be Cutthroat Days, a punk band formed by one of Cass’s closer friends. In their earlier days, Cass helped them out by finding them places to play around town, and designing and sticking a bunch of posters. She gained the band’s trust and became a sort of promoter/manager for them, so much so that once they left Silvertip, they brought her on tour. They also set base in Inkopolis to record their second album. Outside her small town, where most venues were 18+ and nobody already knew her, she was able to craft a fake ID, on which her first name was replaced with “Dana” - her late grandmother's name.
After she turned 18, the band had to split up due to a quarrels between its members, after a flopped second album. The relations between the members were tainted by their degrading lifestyles: Cass had been taking drugs and having sex with them on the regular. Everyone had to find other ways to be useful, and Cass was left behind in Inkopolis alone. She joined a beautician school, to become a makeup artist, since she was already doing makeup for the band. To pay for it, she picked up stripping, to no one’s knowledge. She started using “Dana” also as a stage name, and for people she wouldn’t readily trust.
2015 M.E.
Around 22, she was working two jobs, one as a makeup artist for a well-known brand in Arowana Mall, and one dancing for different clubs, alternating between their clientele. She had been switching apartments often, and ended up in a shoebox apartment.
She met Silviana while dancing, and the two formed a camaraderie, as she turned out to be one of her only true friends. She also met Marzi in a casino, and the two kept having fateful encounters. Despite the modest living conditions, she was able to accumulate wealth. While growing up, her family was affected by all the costly hospitalizations, and she could finally afford any frivolity she’d want.
Her attraction towards Silviana grew, and both planned to leave Inkadia together. Through Marzi's gang ties, Dana saw an opportunity to forge new identity documents to leave. The two became business partners and opened a new strip club, a front for the Tilda Trade's dealings - Amygdala.
After the mess of events at Amygdala, which nearly ended up killing her, she woke up blind in a military watchtower. Dana escaped the Octarian Valley with Itvara, and retraced help who went missing in the aftermath, piecing together the truth of what happened.
